MINES, QUARRIES AND TUNNELS

One of the primary activities for man, which began even before agriculture, is the mining of minerals from mines and quarries. Although it consists in an activity with a high environmental impact, it constitutes the foundation of all other productive activities and, consequently, of the development and well-being of our society.

There are four basic mineral extracting methods: from mines or from open-pit quarries, which are the most common; or from underground mines and quarries which are accessed through shafts or tunnels; the last method is the extraction of minerals and fuels through boreholes.

The difference between mines and quarries basically depends on the material “cultivated” (in mining cultivation is the systematic exploitation of quarries and mines): metal ores, precious stones, refractory products and fuels are extracted from mines; marble, ornamental stones and building stones such as sand gravel, and peat are extracted from quarries.

Whether quarrying, mining or tunneling, these activities have in common: the extreme conditions, the dangerousness and the harshness of the work.
